How Much Does Scuba Certification Really Cost?

Every prospective diver asks this before anything else, and most dive shop websites make it weirdly hard to find out. Here's a straight answer, using our own current pricing so you can see exactly where the money goes.
The certification course itself
Open Water Diver certification, the entry-level card that lets you dive anywhere in the world, starts at $450 with us. That price includes:
- Online study materials and a classroom session
- Pool training sessions
- Use of life support equipment during training (regulator, dive computer, BC)
- Use of tanks and weights
Prices shift a little by session date since class size and scheduling vary. Right now our sessions range from $450 to $475. That's the honest range, not a teaser price that jumps once you show up.
What's not included, and what it actually costs
This is where most people get surprised, so here it is up front.

Why prices vary between dive shops
If you've shopped around, you've probably seen certification prices anywhere from $350 to $700 depending on the shop and the agency. A few things drive that:
- Certification agency. We certify through SDI, which tends to run a bit cheaper than PADI for an equivalent course, partly because SDI includes digital certification cards at no extra charge.
- What's bundled. Some shops price the classroom and pool separately from the open water dives. Ask what's actually included before comparing two numbers side by side.
- Referral dives. If you're planning a warm-water vacation, ask whether you can do your open water certification dives there instead of locally. It's often included in your course fee either way, so it's really about where you'd rather freeze or not freeze.
After certification: ongoing costs
Getting certified is the biggest cost, but not the last one. A few numbers to keep in mind:
- Advanced Adventure Diver (a taste of 5 specialties): $275
- Nitrox certification (longer bottom times): $150
- Rescue Diver: $325
- Gear rental for casual dives, or ongoing tank fills and air/nitrox costs if you own your own gear
None of this is required right away. Most divers get Open Water certified, dive a season or two on rental gear, and then decide what to invest in next.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a cheaper way to try diving before committing to a full certification?
Yes. Our Scuba Discovery Experience is $40 and lets you breathe underwater in a controlled, shallow-water setting with an instructor, no certification required. It's the lowest-cost way to find out if you like it.
Do I need to buy my own gear to get certified?
No. Your course fee covers use of life support equipment (regulator, computer, BC) and tanks and weights during training. You'll want your own mask, snorkel, fins, and boots since those are personal fit items, but you don't have to buy them before your first class.
Why do some sessions cost more than others?
