Murray Bay Wreck
This
shipwreck has been the focus of much maritime research over several decades and
no one is still quite sure which vessel it is. It has been called the Bermuda,
Arnold, Dreadnaught, and Grenada among others. To play it safe, it is
referred to now as the "Murray Bay Wreck" because it is located in
Murray Bay off the south side of Grand Island.
This is probably one of the most visited shipwrecks in the
Great Lakes. The 145 foot schooner lies intact in 30ft of
water. Large schools of rock bass as well as freshwater sponges are
frequently found on the wreck. Penetration through the open cargo holds
can be done without use of a light but is beneficiary to see the details of the
construction of the ship and deck.
