Manhattan
The Manhattan,
a 252ft steamer was carrying a cargo of wheat when a steering malfunction caused
the crew to lose control of the wooden-hulled ship and struck a reef and a fire
broke out. The ship burned to the waterline and sank without a loss of
life on Oct. 25, 1903. Much of the ships machinery was recovered.
Today, timbers from the hull of the ship and pieces of
machinery and equipment lie in 20-30ft of water. The remains are broken up
and a cable runs between the large sections of the shipwreck.
