Kiowa
The Kiowa was a
261 feet long ocean-going freighter. The ship was carrying a cargo of flax
seed when it got caught in a gale on Nov. 30, 1929. It came to rest in 30
feet of water about 4 miles west of AuSable Point Light. Although the
superstructure was scraped for the metal drives of WWII and was dynamited from
the wreck, about 80 percent of the vessel remains.
Today the machinery and large pieces of the Kiowa lie
in 10-25ft of water. Much of the shipwreck layout can be seen from the
surface. Although parts of the wreck and machinery are twisted, the
midships portion is very interesting. Most of the machinery was
placed here and the ship's engine and components can easily be examined.
